The National Archives

Soldiers’ service records up to 1921 and copies of unit war diaries for the First and Second World Wars are held by National Archives (formerly known as the Public Record Office). A war diary will tell you what a unit was doing on a day-to-day basis, but is unlikely to mention individuals by name.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

The CWGC keeps records relating to all those who died on active service in the two World Wars. A database of casualties is accessible via the Commission’s website.

Includes an up to date list of regimental museums.

Army Personnel Records

The service papers of British soldiers who were discharged between 1920 and 1997 are held by the Ministry of Defence Army Personnel Centre.

India Office Records

Official records relating to soldiers who served in the East India Company’s forces and the Indian Army are held in the Oriental and India Office Collections at the British Library.
